Chris hart - flowers on the highway

MUSIC AND LYRICS BY CHRIS HART

“Flowers on the Highway” is track 8 off the first album “Anywhere” by Chris Hart.

This is another song that sprang from a simple observation I had while on a road trip. I noticed a large patch of well-groomed floral arrangements in the medians of the interstate, planted as some kind of highway beautification project. They're all over the United States and I’ve driven past them hundreds of times, but again, something struck me. How many people drive past that every day and not notice at all? The work and effort to plan and plant something like that going completely unnoticed by people zooming past in their cars.

It felt like an analogue of what it’s like to simply be a human in the modern age. Even more so being an artist. The amount of work people put in behind the scenes that just gets lost to the ever-moving void of the internet makes me sad, like there’s no way to break through for people who want to be noticed in any aspect of their life. I wanted to make this song feel like that. The slide guitar sounds like cars going by, the drums and guitars feel like trudging along down the road. The bridge is huge, a high-point of the song and the album, a real explosion of emotion of wanting to be heard. And the end is a fade out, the only one on the album, with the phrase “one day at a time” being repeated until it’s out of earshot. No matter how hard it is we just keep driving, just keep trying.

Lyrics

One day at a time

Fallen so far behind

Waiting for a light to shine

An extraordinary life

Well is it any fun yet?

Late nights running long

Is it everything I wanted?

Is it anything at all?

I feel like flowers on the highway

blooming while you pass them by

The world’s been kicking dust in my face

And the road goes on and on for miles

Now I’m looking for a way back

another road with you

Give me something that I’m good at

and nothing more to prove

‘Cause you’re the only one that’s waiting

to see me reach my peak

And I know I’m always complaining

But lately everything’s so bleak

I feel like flowers on the highway

blooming while you pass them by

The world’s been kicking dust in my face

And the road goes on and on for miles

One day at a time

One day at a time

One day at a time

One day at a time
